Alloying: about the process and its use in metallurgy
Alloying is a process of adding certain components to a metal or other material. These are changes or improvements in the physical and chemical characteristics of the final product. The alloying procedure is a conventional designation of certain processes of the technological category. Addition of components can be volumetric or superficial.
Manufacturing enterprises use various alloying technologies. During the production of blanks, special components are added to the alloy: chromium, nickel and other types of substances. The final product becomes stronger, more durable and acquires the ability to resist the formation of corrosion. The surface of products made of metal and other materials can be treated with these components.
This process is relevant for glass or ceramic products. In this case, during the manufacturing process, an alloying component is applied to the surface – a sputtering system. Sometimes raw materials are added to an alloying element, which allows you to create a workpiece with a unique structure. Doping technology is used in the process of creating semiconductor systems. In this case, an additional element is added to the semiconductor, which changes the conductivity of the conductor.
Human use of alloyed metals
The alloying process has become consciously applied recently. Specialists in this field experienced difficulties due to the fact that the components simply burned during melting. However, alloy steel was used in ancient times, when people specifically looked for meteoric iron, which contained about 8% nickel. Artisans sought to find steel created from ore. The finished product had high strength and was easy to process.
With the advent of the science of chemistry, chemical elements began to be used in the composition of steel. The first recorded case of the successful use of alloying additives will be considered the production of steel, the composition of which included less than 2% carbon, about 9% tungsten and less than 3% manganese. This alloy was invented in 1858 – the raw material was used to create equipment components.
Alloy steel entered mass production after the invention of Garfield, who added about 1% carbon and 12% manganese.
The goals of modern metallurgical alloying
Elements of this category are used to improve strength, physical and chemical resistance. The most popular components are chromium, nickel, vanadium, titanium and other variants of elements or metals. Cadmium and copper are used to increase the durability of the wires. If you add zinc to copper or bronze, the workpiece becomes strong, flexible and resistant to the formation of moisture. Molybdenum is often used for titanium alloy in order to change the structure of the raw material.
The main purposes of doping:
- increase in the strength index of steel without temperature influence;
- improvement of the indicator of hardness, strength, viscosity and ignitability;
- providing the finished product with heat resistance and corrosion resistance.
